Workplaces around the world are plagued by incidents of harassment, bullying and even violence within the workplace.
Unfortunately, many incidents of harassment and bullying are never brought the attention of employers due to the inherently private nature of many of these violations. As a result this area of the law has seen limited results in the protection of workers and prevention of such conduct.
Significant statutory measures have already been put in place to prohibit unacceptable conduct. A draft Code of Good Practice on the Prevention and Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the world of work has now been published for comment.
The draft Code of Good Practice specifically deals with aspects such as policies, procedures, training, awareness, prevention, and management of situations where harassment (including bullying) or violence occurs. The draft Code of Good Practice also goes further and deals with treatment, care and support for victims.
Hopefully, the having a Code of Good Practice of this nature will provide Employers and Employees with useful assistance to properly prevent or address these unfortunate incidents. After all happy workers are productive workers so it is crucial to maintain a happy and healthy working environment for everyone.
